The Steyr AUG is traditionally cited as the first commercially produced bullpup style battle rifles opening the floodgates to a whole family of firearms. Conceived in the early years of the Cold War the AUG was unlike anything else in use at the time. The AUG was constructed primarily of polymer and located the magazine, bolt and firing mechanisms behind the shooters hand. This configuration allowed the AUG to have a 20 inch barrel on a weapon platform that was only 30 inches in length, far shorter than most military battle rifles in use in the early 1960's/1970's. Atop the AUG was an carry handle with housed the integrated 1.5x telescopic scope and iron sights. Adopted initially by the Austrian army in 1978, use of the AUG spread to Austria's state police forces and then to law enforcement agencies and military groups around the world. While there are now a wide variety of AUGs on the market, tailor made to fit a wide variety of needs and situations, the original AUG design remains a iconic firearm representing the view of the feature as seen though the eyes of some of the most brilliant firearms engineers of their time.
